Tech giants express interest in Turkey’s Fatih Project
19.08.2011

Star - US tech industry’s leading names are willing to participate in the Turkish government’s Fatih Project, according to Turkey’s Minister of Economy, Zafer Caglayan. During his official visit to the US to hold talks with executives of the IT industry’s major companies, Caglayan said that Microsoft and Apple have expressed interest in the project aiming at improving the quality of education by supplying high-tech equipment to schools and students.

“Microsoft is willing to cooperate with Turkish companies in the Fatih Project,” said the Minister following his visit to the company’s headquarters in Seattle, adding that he was informed by Microsoft officials that the company’s production operations in 105 countries could also help Turkish companies gain access to new markets.

The project involves the production of some 15 million tablet PCs to be distributed to primary education students.

Turkey’s R&D incentives also aroused interest in Intel, the world’s largest semiconductor producer, which, Caglayan said, might consider investing in an R&D center in Turkey. Another US-based tech company, Cisco Systems, was particularly interested in developing projects for SMEs, said the Minister.

Minister Caglayan’s next stop was Apple, of which he praised the high innovation levels. “Apple executives are eager to work together with Turkish software companies,” the Minister said following his visit to the producer of hot selling gadgets like iPhone and iPad. “Apple also expressed strong interest in the Fatih Project,” he noted.
