Zaman - Turkey’s port city of Mersin on the Mediterranean coast has won the right to host the 2013 Mediterranean Games, after the initial winner Greece lost the organization rights due to lack of funds.
In the rerun of the Olympic Committee voting, Mersin left Libya’s Tripoli and Spain’s Tarragone behind.
“Mersin will see EUR 200 million of investment for the preparation and hosting of the games,” said Turkey’s State Minister for Sports, Faruk Ozak. “Turkey has proved its organizational capabilities in various international events. Izmir held the Mediterranean Games 40 years ago. Mersin will go through an urban transformation like Erzurum did for the 2011 Winter Universiade, and will host the games in excellent shape,” he added.
