Today’s Zaman - Slovenian President Danilo Turk advocated Turkey's bid to join the European Union on Wednesday, saying no country could be precluded from EU membership for reasons of culture.
Turk told the European Parliament that Turkey's negotiations with the EU -- partially frozen over Ankara's refusal to trade with EU member Greek Cyprus -- must continue. He called on fellow EU countries to show pragmatism in admitting new countries, although he said any prospective member must first fulfill all technical criteria. "In its effort to become a global player with strategic significance, the EU needs Turkey. The negotiations on accession should continue.
The EU should not deprive Turkey of the perspective of membership, as this has already been granted. The credibility of the EU is at stake," Turk told members of the European Parliament.
