Today’s Zaman – AA – During his official talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul signed seven cooperation agreements with China in various fields.
President Abdullah Gul began his formal talks in China on Thursday. Speaking after the talks, Jintao said Turkey is an old friend of China and he appreciates Gul’s efforts to promote bilateral relations between the two countries. Accompanied by Alpaslan Korkmaz, the President of the Investment Support and Promotion Agency of Turkey (ISPAT), Abdullah Gul also stressed the two countries' long friendship and said they want to take further steps in bilateral relations. Following the talks between the delegations, seven cooperation agreements were signed between the two countries in energy, banking, finance and culture fields.
President Gul also had a meeting with Chinese CEOs yesterday in Beijing on the sidelines of his formal visit to China. He also visited the Beijing branch of Turkish white goods producer Beko Electronic Co. and attended a ceremony launching the company's new washing machine models. Beko has 280 sales points and 20 stores in China.
Gul’s visit also boosted ties between both countries’ financial institutions. Turkey's Is Bankasi said on Thursday that it signed a framework deal with the Chinese Export-Import Bank for a USD 100 million loan. The bank said in a statement that Is Bankasi and Chinese Eximbank signed the deal in Beijing to be used in foreign trade financing. Turkey's Akbank, soon expected to open a representative office in Beijing, and Garanti Bankasi said on Thursday that they also signed similar agreements with Chinese Eximbank.
