TOFAS: Turkey may become a regional leader in automotive sector

Bugun – Ali Pandir, CEO of Tofas, said the Turkish automotive sector is at a historical turning point. Pandir said they aim to increase Turkey’s manufacturing capacity to 2 million units in 2012 and to utilize a great portion of this capacity. Pandir added: “We are currently standing at a historical turning point. Our competitors in the automotive sector are East European countries, in particular Poland, Czech Republic and Russia. Last year, Poland and the Czech Republic’s automobile production was below Turkey’s production level, whereas Russia emerged as the largest rival. Russia has been affected by the global crisis more than Turkey. Now, all eyes have set on Turkey again.” Pandir noted that new investments in the automobile sector may be drawn to Turkey instead of East European countries, provided that the next one to two years are used in an efficient way.
