Today's Zaman - The production of motor vehicles in Turkey hit 1.1 million in 2007, a 11.3 percent increase over the preceding year and 16th highest worldwide.
According to International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers’ (OICA) 2007 production statistics, 73.1 million motor vehicles were produced last year worldwide. Of these, 53.04 million were automobiles and the remaining 20.06 million were commercial vehicles. The rise in total production amounted to 7.8 percent over 2006.
The Turkish automotive industry, which was launched in the 1950s with truck and off-road vehicle production for the military, has played a major role in Turkey’s industrial development.
Vehicle production exceeded 1 million last year, compared to only 11,000 in 1963. To this end, Turkey has a 1.5 percent share in world motor vehicle production. Of total vehicle production in Turkey in 2007, 634,933 were automobiles, 413,736 were light commercial vehicles, 34,544 were heavy trucks and 16,251 were buses and minibuses.
