Turkey eyes domestic production of tablet PCs

Today’s Zaman - Turkey will seek to begin domestic production of tablet PCs to be distributed to 15 million students, said the Minister of Science, Industry and Technology, Nihat Ergun.

According to press reports, the government prefers domestically produced tablet PCs, which will be distributed free of charge to 15 million students in Turkey. The estimated cost of the project is around USD 7.5 billion, according to Minister Ergun.

“In order to support the domestic industry, we have expanded the scope of public tenders. From now on, the state will pay more attention to buying domestic products, and in line with this, the Ministry of Education will be a driving force behind the development of tablet PCs in Turkey,” said Ergun.

Ergun stated that there will be no distinction between a foreign producer and a domestic one. “The basic idea is to support domestic production and employment, thus contributing to the national economy,” said the Minister, adding that necessary incentives for the local production of tablet PCs will be provided.

The government has plans to make revolutionary changes in Turkish education by adopting the project “Movement to Increase Opportunities and Technology” (FATIH). The aim of the project is to increase standards and quality in education by using advanced technologies such as electronic boards and projectors, and to ensure a gradual transition to e-textbooks in classes.
