Turkey expects 31 million tourists in 2011

Zaman - Turkey is on a fast track to becoming one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Ahmet Barut, President of the Turkish Hoteliers Federation (TUROFED), said that Turkey welcomed over 28 million foreign visitors in 2010, an increase of 5.23 percent on the previous year. “The total tourism revenue is expected to reach USD 25 billion in 2011 with 31 million visitors,” said Barut as he announced the third issue of TUROFED’s seasonal tourism report.

The report indicates that Turkey continues to be one of the leading countries for tourism, ranking 7th in terms of visitor numbers, and 9th by sector income. Turkey’s tourism sector grew by 15.9 percent over the last three years, in contrast to other Mediterranean countries like Greece, France, and Spain, all of which experienced contraction in the same period.
