Invest News DetailToday’s Zaman – Having made a splash as a global meetings and events destination in the past decade, Istanbul ranked the seventh most important destination for hosting global meetings in 2010, up from 17th place the preceding year, a recent survey by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) has shown. The ICCA 2010 country and city rankings have recently been announced. Istanbul, which was the world’s 17th destination in ICCA rankings with 80 congresses in 2009, climbed to seventh with 109 congresses last year. The number of international congresses the megacity hosted a decade earlier was only 29. The metropolis ranked sixth among leading European congress destinations ahead of Lisbon and Amsterdam on the same list, but observers argue a 2010 European Culture Capital title contributed to this success. The city ranked 40th in ICCA city rankings in 2000. Türkiye, meanwhile, ranked as the 20th most important country destination for global meetings with 160 congresses in the ICCA 2010 list, 14 seats up from its ranking in the ICCA 2000 country rankings list. Istanbul currently hosts 80 percent of the global congresses held in Türkiye, and the ministry of tourism has plans to ease the city’s burden with new congress center investments in the fast flourishing Anatolian cities of Ankara, Antalya, Mersin, Izmir, Konya and Bursa.
