Toyota to shift compact sedan production to Turkey, plans to invest EUR 150 million

Zaman - Japanese car maker’s flagship model Corolla prepares for a strong comeback to the country, where it was produced in the hundreds of thousands between 1994 and 2006. “We are proud to announce that Toyota’s Adapazari plant will undertake the production of the C-class sedan,” said Toyota Turkey’s CEO Orhan Özer in a press release, underlining Toyota Turkey’s significant experience in manufacturing sedans. Compact sedans have proven popular in Turkey and the majority of sales in the Turkish passenger car market consist of the type. Sedan type cars have also been traditionally strong sellers in Eastern European countries.

Toyota had ceased Corolla production in Turkey five years ago and focused on the hatchback Auris and family saloon Verso for export markets. According to the company’s European headquarters, Auris production will shift to the company’s UK factory, while the Verso production will remain in Turkey with increased utilization of locally procured parts.

Toyota’s Adapazari plant in northwest Turkey is expected to begin producing the 11th generation Corolla by 2013. The plant’s capacity will increase to 210,000 cars per year with the new Corolla. Toyota will invest about EUR 150 million in the plant for the new model, creating 400 new jobs.
