Ankara to host third largest seed bank

Dunya - The Turkish Ministry for Agriculture and Rural Affairs has recently announced plans to establish the world's third largest seed bank in Türkiye. In this regard, construction work for the seed bank will start during a ceremony to be held in Ankara by Mehdi Eker, Türkiye’s Minister for Agriculture and Rural Affairs. "We need to assess the current situation and protect our biological diversity and genetic resources", said Eker. "There are about 10,000 plant species and nearly 3,000 endemic plant species in Türkiye. Türkiye is considered a center for finding genes of a number of plant species of great importance for biological research. Therefore, we have decided to establish a seed bank in Türkiye, which will contain genes from 250,000 plant species."
