Turkey eyes mobile number portability from Oct

Reuters - Turkey will allow consumers to take their mobile numbers with them when they switch operator from the end of October, and could award 3G licences towards the end of the year, the telecoms watchdog chief said on Thursday. Rivals to Turkey's leading cellphone firm Turkcell have long called for so-called mobile number portability and want it to be in place before third generation licences are awarded. Vodafone and unlisted Turkish operator Avea did not participate in a 3G tender last year as number portability had not been implemented, and a 3G licence awarded to Turkcell was cancelled due to a lack of competition. "On number portability, the infrastructure will be completed in April and it will start to be implemented from the end of October," Telecommunications Board Chairman Tayfun Acarer told reporters.
