Milliyet - Five Turkish companies have appeared in the list of the world’s top steelmakers compiled by the industry magazine, Metal Bulletin. The 2010 list comprises steel companies from all over the world exceeding a capacity of 2 million tons.
Turkey’s leading steelmaker Erdemir took the 47th spot in the 116-company list, while Habas made it to the 72nd place with 4.4 million tons. Other Turkish companies, Icdas, Diler and Colakoglu, ranked 76th, 108th and 110th, respectively.
Driven by strong domestic demand and increasing exports, Turkey’s steel industry has been steadily growing since 2005. According to data from the World Steel Association, Turkey ranked 10th among global crude steel producers in 2010. The sector’s 2011 statistics show that the country’s steel production in the first quarter increased by almost 25 percent over the last year, reaching a total of 7.9 million tons.
