Swedish FM Bildt: EU should keep its promises to Türkiye

Dunya - The European Union should keep its promises to Türkiye regardless of public opinion, said the EU Term President, Sweden's Foreign Minister Carl Bildt. "Have the EU enlargements up to now taken place because the public wanted them?", he asked during a debate over the EU enlargement in the European Parliament. "As far as I can see, far right deputies are against Türkiye's EU membership due to its large, Muslim majority population. However the Treaty of Amsterdam and its Article 49 do not exclude big countries, nor does the treaty have religious criteria. This is what we should abide by."
